Smack dab in the middle of the First Battle of Grozny. Russia began the assault similarly to how they are positioning themselves against Ukraine. Russia surrounded Grozny and began the assault, attacking all sides of the city. Grozny put up a heroic defense and had annihilated over half of the entire attacking Russian force. An estimated 4000 Russian forces died on the New Year’s Eve attack. Estimated at nearly 30,000 non-combatants were killed during the duration of the battle. After roughly 3 months of fighting, both sides were incredibly demoralized and had lost all hope of winning, after many fraudulent ceasefire agreements by Russia, a truce was finally agreed on and the remaining Chechen forces with their remaining equipment withdrew from the city signifying a “victory” to Russia.
